Guelph
MP Frank Valeriote seemed to be promising too much when he was first
elected last October. The Liberal caucus member was just off a
hard-fought election win when he was undertaking to reach across party
lines, to work with different levels of government and to variously
stay in contact with his constituents.Scores of locals received
these assertions with cynicism. What's the old line? How do you tell a
politician is lying? Punchline: Their lips are moving.
Canadians
and Guelph-area residents have felt burned in the past by political
types who over promised, under-delivered, seemingly disappeared or who
adopted new policy notions once elected. Our jaundiced view of
politicians and their promises was further fuelled by myriad examples
elsewhere proving we ought to be highly skeptical of just these things.
To
be fair, however, we're coming up on year-one of Valeriote being
officially a public candidate -- remember the byelection that never was
-- and he's been rather true to his words.
